The Equinox wins 12 Society of Collegiate Journalists awards

For the second year in a row, The Equinox was recognized with awards from the Society of Collegiate Journalists. The Equinox brought in a total of 12 awards. Listed below are all the awards. Names in parenthesis are the judges:

News in the wind

Greetings, Equinox fans! Its been a while since the last Inside The ‘Nox post and there is an overload of information to divulge. Are you ready, guys?

First of all, we have begun our search for the 2009-2010 Executive Board. We are currently reviewing applications (we got a lot of them) and are going through two rounds of rigorous interviewing. Hey, it is what we do best, right? Things seem to be falling into place on that front, with our new Business Manager John Garvey already hired and ready to begin training with the newspaper. On behalf of the entire Equinox e-board, welcome John!

In other news, we’ve FINALLY received CollegePublisher 5.0. For those of us who are not online news site freaks, that means the KeeneEquinox Web site will be revamped and looking better than ever! We have our webmaster diligently unlocking all of the program’s secrets and should have the site looking awesome by the end of the semester.

Getting away from the topic of the actual newspaper, we have been working on our annual end of the semester section, Best of Keene. As you all know, the Best of Keene is a pullout section that contains all the favorites of KSC students. It should be better than ever this year with new categories to attract readers. We’ve just put in orders for our Equinox gear, which will include our usual staff t-shirts. However, this year we will be getting sweatpants, baseball shirts, and hoodies. Be jealous, KSC, we’re going to be styling.

On yet another note, we are working on an alumni reunion party at the College Camp on April 26. There will be members of The Equinox from all different years as well as the current members, food, and a cash bar. So, if you feel like reminiscing about what transpires at 3 a.m. in the office, please come to the reunion event.

I suppose it is appropriate to end with what is currently going on in the office. It is approximately 11:38 p.m. on a Tuesday night. All section editors (with the exception of Opinions) are steadily working. The night looks to be long because the front page dominant art on KSC’s 100th birthday is not ready and a large A&E story has yet to be written by our illustrious editor. Looks like tonight will be a 3 a.m. or later excursion in the third floor of the Student Center.

Support for our fellow college newspapers

Once again the rights for college newspapers and journalists have been threatened. The board of trustees at the University of Oregon decided to hire a publisher that would have ultimate control over the student newspaper, the Oregon Daily Emerald. In response, the staff of the Emerald went on strike. Spearheaded by the Daily Californian, the student newspaper of UC Berkeley, several college newspapers have signed a petition in support of the Emerald’s staff.

When I heard about this I was quick to gather support from my colleagues and now the Equinox has signed on in support of the Emerald. When our rights as college journalists are compromised, it is important for us to stand up for one another.

Well, it’s our favorite day of the week, which means production, production and more production. This is our last issue before Spring Break and Randy and I (as well as the rest of the editors, I’m sure) have a ton of work to do for our Feature Writing class. So, we have a goal of having everything done, except student assembly, which happens tomorrow, before we leave tonight. Will it be a long one? YUP!!! Hopefully it goes smoothly, though…

If anything terribly exciting happens, I will be updating throughout the day and night.

Life Lessons at 30,000ft

Hello blogosphere, Corey Smith here. I’ve always tried to keep a blog of sorts over the years, but have failed miserably to maintain it. Perhaps just contributing to a staff blog will keep things fresh and exciting, but enough about me…

The Equinox has made it back from beautiful San Diego, California. It was a bit of risky business getting back to the newsroom, however, because a Noreaster decided to infultrate our flight path, making the ride a little less boring than expected. It’s never a good sign when your captain announces that everyone needs to tighten their seatbelts while he searches for “safer air”. Despite imagining that terrifying moment when the plane plunged 10,000 ft, I was also able to find the time to reflect on the Associated Collegiate Press Convention and the impact it has on a newspaper staff.

We’re a dedicated group of journalists and we spend a great deal of time together in the newsroom conceptualizing stories, designing pages, etc. However, the thought of spending four days straight around each other made some of us cringe a little bit. Would we get fed up with each other after two sun-soaked days and begin separating into groups? Would we form an Equinox version of Survivor and send our weakest link out into the mean streets of the city? What I found was…absolutely, positively not.

I highly encourage other college newspapers to take advantage of these conventions. They are not only useful for absorbing information about the field of journalism, but they really force a news staff to get together and just hang out for a while. This can be great for newsroom dynamics after the convention. What good is a newsroom full of people who can’t loosen up around each other and have a good time while they are pumping out hard news until 3 a.m.? Let me be the first to say, it really makes the job a lot easier.

In the case of San Diego, our staff had many opportunities to get closer. We participated in the most communal activity a group can do: we broke bread. Nothing says ‘I love you, man’ like sharing a plate of buffalo wings or chips and salsa. Members of staff that don’t normally spend much time with each other went to sessions and experienced the same lessons together. And, of course, we all packed onto the San Diego trolley to head downtown to see the sights.

The other networking that can be done during these conventions is between college newspapers. Even though we didn’t gain scores of friends (they’re just jealous, right?) we were exposed to some very talented staff members and saw things in other newspapers that inspired us to keep trying out new techniques. Just as a side note, we have some fans in Denver, Colorado. The ‘Nox thinks you’re rad, UDEN!

So, even though we aren’t poolside in paradise sipping on iced tea and commiserating about being overworked and underpaid, we still brought that second family mentality back with us. After all, we’re stuck with each other. Might as well make the best out of it! You should too!

California Dreamin’

Well, after a long weekend in San Diego, we are wrapping it up and getting ready to head back to snowy, cold, terrible New England.

We walk away with an 8th place finish for weekly broadsheets (not great, but we’ll take what we can get).

Anyways, tomorrow should be fun trying to put a paper together.

The Equinox prepares for San Diego

This, without a doubt, is a big week for The Equinox.

Right now we’re putting together a big paper (24 pages) and on Thursday the majority of the e-board is jetsetting to San Diego for the Associated Collegiate Press journalism conference. Needless to say, we’re cramming in a lot at the beginning of the week.

UPDATE: We all just got really distracted because two cases of office supplies came in. Hooray for legal pads!

As you can imagine, San Diego is on our minds right now. We’ll be flying out from Manchester Thursday around noon and arriving in San Diego (direct flight) around 7 p.m. eastern time. Thursday night we’ll get settled in, have a group dinner and prepare for Friday when all the seminars begin. This conference is very “new media” based, so we’ll be heading out trying to build on what we’ve already started in terms of video and audio on our Web site. We do plan on doing at least some work while we’re in sunny San Diego. We’ll be updating this blog with photos and videos of our trip so you can get a good idea of what we’re doing. Not to mention we still have a normal paper next week, so Saturday will be filled with some copy editing of stories. See? We are devoted.

Now we’ll all get back to work so we can put out a paper in (relatively) early fashion.

I just finished a little interview with Larry Welkowitz on KSC’s radio station, WKNH, and talked about what the Equinox is all about.

Larry said he was hoping to have a regular Thursday session so we can let his listeners what to expect in the paper each week.

Oh, and on that note, the paper won’t be available until tomorrow (Friday) due to an unfortunate accident regarding our delivery man.
